Storyline
Starting off in Kansas and in black and white this movie tells the tale of a magician and conman, Oscar Diggs ( Oz, for short ) who while running away from a previous encounter he jumps into a hot air balloon and flies off to the land of Oz. While there he meets Theodora who tells him about a prophecy about a wizard coming down from the skies and defeating the wicked witch. Should he do that, he will have riches beyond his wildest dreams. Being greedy he decides to go defeat the wicked witch so he can have all the riches in Oz.
Helped by a flying monkey, played by Zack Braff, they go in search of Glinda.
My review.
It had been years since I last watched The Wizard of Oz but I still was able to recall anything important when it came to this movie. When Oz lands in the land of Oz, he sets about a chain of events that will eventually tie into The Wizard of Oz.When Oz meets Theodora and she falls for his charms, which eventually leads to the appearance of the Wicked Witch of the west, you can see why he can be construed as a conman. He gets brought up to the Emerald City and is told by Evanora about the evil the wicked witch is doing and how he has to save Oz, he goes about his journey to defeat her.
Stunning visuals and a good funny story keep the longish movie ticking over quite nicely. However if you were to watch this in 3d, I would suggest that you dont watch this if you suffer from motion sickness. There are a couple of parts where it can trigger it in some people.
Overall, I thought the movie was very good, highly enjoyable, and you dont need to be a real fan of The Wizard of Oz before going to see this one. Its longish at 130 minutes but you dont notice the time going by.
I would give it 8 out of 10.
